The Killers – Bones

After viewing the Killers music video for their hit track ‘Bones’, I personally think that the video itself is incredibly creative and stands out really well. The idea of the characters in the video turning into skeletons is an extremely crazy idea but it seems to pull itself of, because the lyrics suit the video which makes the video look really good.

The video switches from performance base to narrative base which gives a good mixture of the two as it keeps on switching between them; you don’t get bored watching the music video. Straight away you know that it is going to be a rock song due to the fact that the start is narrative which then shows a wide angle shot of the band; The Killers.

The structure of the music video in my opinion; is incredibly good as there is an equal balance of both narrative and performance. The band in the music video is performing in front of massive visual screen which is of the actual narrative in the video. So throughout the video there is always narrative because even when the band is performing the narrative is behind them on a massive screen; this makes the music video rather unique and very effective.

Straight from the start of the music video there is many great shots used e.g. the mid two shot of the couple sitting in their car; this establishes what location they are in and what the location of the music video is going to start of from. Great shots within a music video are very important for the video to be a success; so this point proves that this music video is a success e.g. there is a shot of the bass guitarist playing which is usually an average band performance shot but in this shot the bass guitarist is a skeleton with clothes on. This little bit of extra detail gives a huge effect to the video and makes it unique in so many different ways.

In my opinion I think that the success of this video comes from the fact that it is so unique. Not only the video includes humans who then turn into skeletons according to the lyrics of the song, the band is performing in front of a massive screen which has the narrative from the video on it. I don’t think this type of video has been produced before so I personally think that the video it is very unique. In my opinion, the special effects used in the music video are to a very high standard which is also part of the reason to why I think this video is so successful. This is because if the video was very boring and didn’t have any uniqueness to it then it wouldn’t be a success, but as it has extremely good special effects and unique ideas about the narrative and performance then it is definitely a success.

Most rock band music videos involve mostly band performance shots and a little bit of narrative which is the usually potion for a rock band music video. But this music video has an equal balance between both narrative and performance base which makes this music video different to other rock band music videos but in a very good effective way.

The target audience for this music video is probably old teens to people in their twenty’s, who like to listen to rock music and in particular bands such as The Killers and Coldplay. They are targeted by the uniqueness of the video as it is so creative just like The Killers; as there aren’t many bands like them. The video is creative because of the ideas used e.g. humans turning into skeletons according to the lyrics, and the band performing in front a massive screen with the narrative on it. These ideas are very creative which is how the target audience is targeted.

The Killers - Somebody told me

After viewing the Killers music video for one of their most well known track; ‘Somebody told me’, I personally think that the video itself is very plain but at the same time quite creative because of the location which the band is located in.

The structure of the video consists completely of band performance, due to the fact that the band is playing in front of a big in the middle of no where. The screen used in the background behind the band shows close ups and various other shots of the band members including wide angle shots. The screen also shows images of the odd girl dancing in front of the screen with bright pink colours lit up behind her, and the logo for the Killers lit up on the screen. As there is no narrative or concept base used in the video, I personally think that the video itself is rather boring as there is no uniqueness about it.

During the video there are many great camera shots and angles used which makes the video stand out a little bit more than it already does; this is because the video is purely of band performance which makes the video quite boring. Using various band shots and angles breaks up the video a little bit which makes it not as boring.

I personally don’t think that the music video for ‘Somebody told me’ is successful due to the fact that I find it quite boring and dull; this is because it consists purely of band performance and involves no narrative or concept base. If the video was a little bit more creative and didn’t just involve performance then it would be successful because the band performance in this video is rather good but gets boring after a couple of minutes.

Most rock band music videos involve mostly band performance shots and a little bit of narrative which is the usually the correct potion for a rock band music video in order for the video to be successful. But this isn’t the case in this music video as it consists completely of band performance shots and no narrative or concept base is involved at all.

In my opinion the target audience for this music video is old teens to people in their late twenty’s or early thirty’s, people who like to listen to rock music and in particular bands such as The Killers, Razorlight, and Coldplay. People in this age group are usually targeted by the uniqueness of the video and the creativity of the video and the band itself e.g. the Killers. But in this case the Killers have opted for targeting their target audience by consisting the music video entirely of band performance and band shots on a large screen behind the actual band. Even though the idea of purely band performance is quite boring, it is also quite creative with the fact that there is a big screen behind the band. No other bands involve big screens placed behind the band in there music videos which again suggests that the Killers are a unique band.

The Killers - When you were young

After viewing the Killers music video for one of their most successful track; ‘When you were young’, I personally think that the video itself is incredibly creative and very touching; as in the storyline. The majority of the Killers music videos consist highly of band performance in front of a big colourful screen which is the complete opposite to this video. The idea of the very touching and sad storyline linking in with the words of the song works really well, and the narrative of the video is very unique on its own which is one of the reasons why this video is so successful and unique.

The video itself consists highly of narrative but does involve band performance, which at the end of the video is included in the narrative as the main woman in the video walks past the band. The killers are well known for including mostly band performance in their music videos but in this specific music video they include mostly narrative. The narrative in the video links in really well with the lyrics of the song which gets the audience more involved, and doesn’t allow the audience to get bored with the video. During the video there are short shots of the band performing which is a really good insert into the video as it breaks up the narrative a little bit and keeps the audience involved in the video.

Throughout the music video there are many great shots used e.g. near the start when there is a close up tracking shot of the main man in the video driving his car, then he suddenly sees the woman which grabs his attention; so there’s a really serious frightened facial expression from him. Great shots within a music video are extremely important for the video to be a success; so this point proves that this music video is a huge success e.g. there is a great wide angle shot which has the entire band performing in, in a bar. This shot establishes which people are part of the band and which location they are playing in.

In my opinion I think that the success of this specific Killers music video comes from the fact that they haven’t produced a video like this before so it makes the video rather unique. Not only the video includes a very unique and touching narrative, it also includes great band shots which break up the narrative brilliantly. The killers have never produced a video like this before so that it why I personally think that the video is so unique and successful. The narrative in the music video is to a very high standard which is also part of the reason why I personally think this video is so successful. Part of the reason is because if the video was just performance or even narrative then it would be quite boring, but as the Killers bring in a bit of performance base then that breaks up the narrative extremely well.

The majority of rock band music videos involve mostly band performance shots and a little section of narrative which is usually the average rock band music video. But in this specific music video they is mostly narrative and a little bit of performance base which balances out the video really well. This is also the reason why the video is so successful and unique because not many rock Band music videos involve mostly performance base. The majority of narrative makes the video a lot different to other rock band music videos but in a very good and effective way.

The target audience for this music video in my opinion is old teens to people in their late twenty’s an early thirty’s, who like to listen to rock band music an particular bands such as the Killers, Coldplay and Razorlight. The target audience is targeted by the uniqueness of the video because the majority of narrative and a little bit of band performance makes the video very creative, and unique in its own way. The video is very creative just like the Killers are which is another reason why the video and the song itself are so successful.

The Killers - The world we live in

After viewing the Killers music video for one of their lesser known hit track ‘The world we live in’, I personally think that the video itself is very creative due to the narrative and the various unusual camera shots used. The idea of the calm beautiful location links in really well with the lyrics and the actual music of the song, which creates a really good effect.

The video involves both performance and narrative but focuses mainly on narrative. This extra bit of detail gives the video a good balance between the two and makes the video stand out really well; as The Killers are well known for more performance shots than narrative. If the video consisted purely of either narrative or performance then the video would be rather boring to watch. But as it involves both, the video is really effective and doesn’t exactly get boring. Straight away at the start of the video, you have a feeling that the song is going to be a rock song. This is due to a low angle establishing shot of the band members walking along a bridge, then standing looking over at a view at the beginning of the video.

The structure of the music video in my opinion; is incredibly creative as it involves mostly narrative rather than performance; which is completely the opposite of a stereotypical rock band music video. From The Killers music videos which I have seen, they consist of performance which involves all of the band members playing the instruments which they play in the band. But in this music video the only type of performance is Brandon Flowers singing the lyrics of song in various locations which is quiet usual for a Killers music video, but it proves to be rather effective.

Straight from the start of this music video there are many shots used e.g. the low angle establishing shot from under the bridge; which establishes where the shot is being taken from and shows the band members walking across the bridge. Great shots within a music video are very important for the video to be a success; so this point proves that this music video is a success e.g. the close up of Brandon Flowers singing through a hole in a wall; this is another great shot which is included within the music video.

In my opinion I think that the success from this music video comes from the great and unusual shots used; that is also part of the reason why I think the video is so unique. Not only the video is full of great shots, it is also full of great locations which adds a little bit of extra detail to the video and makes it a lot more effective. I don’t think this type of music video has been produced before so I personally think that this video is extremely unique in its own way. This is because if the video didn’t involve great shots and great locations then it wouldn’t be very successful and wouldn’t be as unique as it already is.

The majority of rock band music videos involve mostly band performance shots and a little bit of narrative which is a great balance for rock band music videos. But for this music video there is mostly narrative and a little bit of performance, which makes this video extremely different to other rock band music videos but in a very effective way.

In my opinion the target audience for this music video is old teens to people in their twenty’s and early thirty’s, who like to listen to rock music an in particular bands such as The Killers, Coldplay, The White Stripes. The audience is targeted by the uniqueness of the video as it is extremely creative just like The Killers; as The Killers are a unique band. The video is creative because of the ideas used e.g. great and unusual shots.

These ideas are very creative which is how the target audience is targeted.

The White Stripes - The hardest button to button

After viewing The White Stripes music video for one of their less successful tracks; ‘The hardest button to button’, I personally think that the video itself is extremely creative and rather fun to watch. The White Stripes are a very unique band which means that they have their own unique style. The White Stripes music video usually always consist of band performance and unusual but very effective special effects, and in this music video there is purely band performance but the band members play whilst they go round various locations which gives the video a very unique effect. The band member’s move on the baseline which gives the video a very unusual effect because it hasn’t been seen before in a music video but it is a very unique and effective effect.

The video itself consists purely of band performance but when the members of the band move on the baseline, this shows a bit of narrative within the video. If the video consisted of just standard band performance then it would be rather boring to watch but as The White Stripes are a very unique band they bring that into their music videos. As the video consists of exciting band performance and not standard band performance, this means that the video is rather fun to watch and is quite exciting; isn’t boring to watch. The idea of the band moving on the baseline is the fact behind the video being very unique and effective; and that the main part behind the success of the music video.

Throughout the music video there are many great and exciting shots used e.g. the close up of the drummer in the band playing, but on each beat she moves further away which is a very creative shot which proves effective. Great shots within a music video are an extremely vital and important factor in order for the video to be a success; so this point definitely proves that this music video is a massive success e.g. there is a great wide angle shot of the guitarist and the drummer playing whilst they move on each beat down a tunnel towards a train subway.

In my opinion I think that the success of this White Stripes music video comes from the fact that it is the same style as other various White Stripes videos, but very unique compared to other rock band music videos; as this type of video hasn’t been produced before apart from existing White Stripes videos. Not only the video is very unique just like the band themselves are, the video is very creative and is full of great shots which link in with the music very well. The main part of why this music video is very successful is due to the creativity of the shots used, and the fact that on each beat the drummer and the singer move; which is why this video is so creative.

Nearly all rock band music videos consist highly of band performance shots and a little bit of narrative which is usually the average rock band music video. But in this White Stripes music video there is entirely band performance but it is also mixed with narrative at the same time which makes the video rather effective. On every beat in the song, the drummer and the guitarist move which gives the video its own uniqueness as there aren’t any other rock band music videos like this specific one. Even though this video consists entirely of band performance, it is extremely different and unique compare to other rock band videos which consist highly of band performance; as this band performance isn’t boring.

The target audience for this music video in my opinion is young teens to people in their early twenty’s, who like to listen to rock bands such as The Killers, Coldplay and The White Stripes. The target audience is targeted by the uniqueness of the video because of the idea of the band members moving on the beta of the song. The video is very creative just like the White Stripes are which another reason why the video is so successful.

Oasis - Don't look back in anger

After viewing the Oasis music video for one of their most popular and successful tracks; ‘Don’t look back in anger’, I personally think that the video itself is very effective because of the ideas used and the great shots used throughout the video e.g. The mid shot of the drummer playing the drums on a platform in the middle of a swimming pool. The majority of Oasis music videos consist highly of band performance which includes a bit of narrative; which is why Oasis music videos are so unique and successful.

The video itself consists highly of band performance with a bit of narrative which is the average combination for an Oasis music video. Oasis are well known for creating music with mostly band performance and a little bit of narrative which is why this specific music video has been produced in the same way. During the video there are many mid shots and close ups of each individual band member performing which is a really good insert into the video as it allows the audience to know exactly which band members play which instrument or who is the main singer; in this case Liam Gallagher.

Throughout the music video there are many great shots used e.g. at the start of the video when there is a panning shot of an old fashioned white chair. This specific shot adds creativity to the video which is why the video is so unique and successful just like Oasis is. Great shots within a music video are extremely important for the video to be a success; so this specific point definitely proves that this music video is a huge success e.g. there is a close up of Liam Gallagher playing the guitar with the rest of the band members sitting on a wall in the background. This shot shows the wide range of shots used within the video and also shows the creativity of the video.

In my opinion I think that the success of this specific Oasis hit music video comes from the fact that it is the same genre as existing Oasis music videos but is unique to other rock band music videos. Not only the video includes great shots, it also has a really unusual but really good location which adds to the uniqueness of the video. The narrative in the video links in with the performance shots really well is one of the main parts to why this music video is so successful and unique.

The majority of rock band music videos involve a majority of band performance shots and a little bit of narrative which is the average dose for a rock band music video. This music is the same to an average music video in what to include e.g. performance or narrative. But this Oasis music video is very unique with the shots and ideas included because they are to a very high standard. Tying in narrative shots with performance shots is unusual for a rock band music video which is another reason to why this music video is such a success.

The target audience for this music video in my opinion is young teens to people in their late thirty’s, who like to listen to rock bands such as Coldplay and Oasis. The target audience is targeted by the uniqueness of the video because of the great and unusual shits used which is why the video is so successful and unique. The video is very creative just like Oasis are which is another reason to why this video is so unique.
